BARNSC Standing Committees: What Are They and What Do They Do

By: Audra Weisenberger, former BARNSC Southeastern Director

The Breeders of the American Rabbit National Specialty Club currently has nine active standing committees, each serving an essential role in supporting and improving the club’s operations and programs.

Standards Committee

This five-member committee reviews the current ARBA Standard of Perfection for the American rabbit and proposes updates to improve clarity and readability. The President appoints the chairperson and members from a list of interested candidates, with all appointments requiring approval by two-thirds of the Board of Directors. Proposed changes are presented to the membership for a vote before submission to ARBA for consideration.

Constitution and Bylaws Committee

Also composed of five members, this committee reviews and drafts amendments to the BARNSC Constitution and Bylaws as they are suggested or become necessary. Appointments are made by the President and approved by two-thirds of the Board.  This committee ensures that the club’s governing documents up-to-date, cohesive, and easy to understand.  Committee members serve as a resource to ensure the club is adhering to those regulations.

Brand and Merchandise Committee

This committee promotes the American rabbit through club merchandise and creative branding efforts. BARNSC maintains an online store featuring various items available for purchase. During major events such as the American National or ARBA Convention, contests are often held to select commemorative artwork featured on special-edition items.  This committee also works in conjunction with the Website Committee as necessary to ensure that the club presents a unified look across our products, social media, and website.

Awards Committee

The Awards Committee researches and recommends awards for Sweepstakes, the American National, and ARBA Convention winners, subject to final approval by the Board of Directors. Awards are presented for Best of Breed (BOB), Best Opposite Sex (BOS), Best of Variety (BOV) and Best Opposite Sex of Variety (BOSV) in Blue and White, Colored Fur, White Fur, and Overall Fur.

Newsletter Committee

The newsletter, produced by the Secretary, features club updates, upcoming events, and articles from the Board of Directors. It serves as a key communication tool to keep members informed and engaged.  Guest writers are also permitted to submit articles for publication in the newsletter.

Sweepstakes Committee

Appointed by the BARNSC Board, the Sweepstakes Committee is responsible for calculating sweepstakes points compiled from the show reports that the club receives from ARBA and BARNSC sanctioned shows.  Upon calculation, the committee sends the completed calculations to the Secretary and/or the Webmaster for publication.

Guidebook and Historical Committee

This committee is responsible for overseeing the publication of the BARNSC Guidebook every five years.  There is still much to do when not updating the guidebook.  Within this committee, there is a Club Historian who supervises the continuous compilation of breed records, wins, old Standards, photos, and anything else found to be pertinent to the history of the American rabbit.

Audit Committee

The club auditor reviews all financials, communications, committee records, and membership data. Findings and recommendations are reported to the Board, which determines any necessary actions. Audits are conducted annually or as directed by the President.

Website Committee

This committee maintains the BARNSC website, ensuring all information, including club news, event details, and contact listings for the Board is accurate and up to date.  The Webmaster also oversees all the club’s social media and online store.  The Brand and Merchandise committee works in conjunction with this committee to ensure availability of club items for sale and ensure a cohesive look for our brand across our platforms.
